Sony Xperia Flagship XZ2 & XZ2 Compact: What’s What?

Apple and Samsung may be the bosses of the pay monthly mobile phone world, but there are multiple brands on pay monthly deals available especially if you are looking for something far more affordable.

The recent launch of the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact has had a mix of reviews from users and tech guru’s. The new handsets were launched at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona where the Japanese company showcased the overhauled angular handset design but what other new features does the flagship XZ2 have that the XZ1 didn’t?

Both Xperia handsets feature a fingerprint scanner to the rear, a USB-C port on the bottom side and a “quick launch” shutter button to open the camera.

A range of Xperia phones on pay monthly or sim free are available from many retailers and online stores.  Let’s take a closer look flagship Sony Xperia XZ2.

DESIGN

The design is the biggest difference when comparing the compact over the XZ2. The XZ2 is coated front and back in Gorilla Glass curving smoothly around the rear of the device. The XZ2 Compact deliberately avoids the heavier glass by opting for a completely plastic matt finish in a handful of colors. Sony has stipulated that plastic Compact is scratchproof.

Both phones do have a reduced bezel in comparison to its predecessor; the XZ2 is 13 percent smaller than the XZ1. However, when looking at the iPhone X and Samsung S9, it is still quite sizeable.

DISPLAY

The XZ2 Compact showcases a bigger screen than the iPhone 8, but surprisingly, the overall device size is smaller. Both phones are full HD/HDR and are centered around producing amazing displays for watching films and playing games.

Sony has chosen to focus on their version of HDR (high dynamic range) technology used in the Sony Bravia line of TVs. Both models of the Xperia XZ2 can convert SDR content to something brighter with more contrast and range.

AUDIO

You will benefit from each model creating virtual surround sound achieved with the combination of a top and bottom speaker. While keeping the same speaker arrangement, Sony has upgraded the way the speakers work in the XZ2 making the volume increase by 20 percent compared to the XZ1.

Only available on the bigger XZ2 handset is the option to turn on the “dynamic vibration system” which Sony likened to the PS4 Dualshock 4. The new feature allows you to control the intensity of the vibration based on the audio of the film you’re watching or game you’re playing.

CAMERA

Another thing to note is that both handsets offer identical models of camera. Both have 19-megapixel rear-facing and 5-megapixel selfie camera. However, Sony has opted to stay with the single-lens camera for both models; not using an upgraded dual-lens like Apple and Samsung.

Enable the HDR mode to take great looking shots. The camera has no issues with restoring color to parts of the photo that some other higher-end cameras would fail to do. Be aware that taking photos in this mode does use 25 percent more space.

CONCLUSION

The bigger XZ2 is a slightly heavier device, 198g v 168g. That doesn’t mean it feels uncomfortable to hold, in fact, the evenly distributed weight makes it feel more comfortable.

There are plenty of attractive added features to both XZ2 handsets including wireless charging capability, a better-placed fingerprint sensor, and a neat, sleek design. However, Sony is still not running with the big dogs just yet.

One thing we have to commend Sony for is that they have produced two sizes of a flagship phone. Unlike Samsung and Apple where they tend to use lower-end software and inhibit the features of a compact phone, Sony has kept the software the same with added extras on the larger XZ2.

Overall we are impressed with the functionality and design of the Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact. Depending on whether you prefer a larger and slightly heavier handset will be the decider on which version you choose.
